Peace for Ukraine
One of my favorite memories of visiting my family in Ukraine was driving outside of Kyiv and seeing vast fields of sunflowers — one of my favorite flowers. Sunflowers are recognized as symbol of peace in Ukraine; you can learn more about the meaning of sunflowers in Ukraine here. I have turned to art as my platform to #standwithukraine.

When I saw Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko’s paintings up-close, I was instantly taken away by the bold, bright colors of her work. My notes from the exhibit included “bright, bright colors!”
A self-taught artist, Maria worked in the naïve art style. Her work reflects the kaleidoscope of Ukrainian folk art from paintings on paper, painted earthenware pottery, and colorful cross-stitch embroidery, known as vyshyvanka. In 2009, UNESCO declared that was the year of Prymachenko.
Inspired by Maria’s bold use of color, participants will create a zine filled with floral patterns! An upcoming holiday that my family celebrates is International Women’s Day on March 8th, which we usually celebrate by sending greetings and flowers to women in our lives. We’ll create a zine of flowers for you to send to a friend! “Zines” comes from the word “magazine.” While we will create one-of-kind zines, we’ll also discuss some ways to reproduce your zine if you want to make copies to share!
In 2023, mother-daughter duo Tatiana and Anjelika hosted a fundraiser through CFM Friends that raised over $1,020 for Sunflower of Peace! I will continue supporting the important work of Sunflower of Peace.

Last year, mother-daughter duo Tatiana and Anjelika hosted a fundraiser through CFM Friends that raised over $1,800 for Sunflower of Peace! This year, we are partnering with Sunflower of Peace to paint sunflowers that will be included in care packages that Sunflower of Peace provides for internally displaced persons, and vulnerable populations in Ukraine.
